This is the smallest woodpecker found in North America. It is common throughout much of the United States and Canada, and can often be seen around dead trees or telephone poles. Like other woodpeckers, it taps its beak like a drum as a territorial display. It eats a variety of insects and their larvae, and some berries and seeds. Birdfeeders with suit or peanut butter also attract this woodpecker.
