James D. Bales wrote Not Under Bondage to expound his views on divorce and remarriage. In response, Thomas B. Warren penned Keeping the Lock in Wedlock to refute Bales’ error. Bales then denied twenty–five of the twenty-six positions he previously espoused.
Under Bondage to the Law of Christ shows from Bales’ own writings that he began teaching a number of doctrines he had formerly opposed. It shows the simplicity of Matthew 19:9 and documents the fact of Bales’ departure from the truth. The book contains a multitude of quotations from books which are crucial in the contemporary divorce-remarriage question. It required many months of research to find these quotations, and many more months to analyze the points on which these quotations contradict contemporary views by the same writer.
